    About Gangotri Dham

Gangotri Dham is one of the four holy shrines of the Char Dham Yatra, along with Yamunotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. The Gangotri Temple is dedicated to Goddess Ganga and is believed to be the place where the River Ganga descended to Earth from heaven.

The temple is built on the banks of the Bhagirathi River, which is considered the actual source of the Ganga before it merges with the Alaknanda River at Devprayag. Devotees from all over India visit Gangotri every year to seek blessings and spiritual purification.

The temple opens every year during Akshaya Tritiya (April–May) and closes on the occasion of Diwali (October–November), depending on weather conditions.

    History and Mythology of Gangotri

According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagirath performed severe penance to bring the River Ganga down to Earth to liberate the souls of his ancestors. Goddess Ganga agreed to descend, but her powerful force could have destroyed the Earth.

To control her descent, Lord Shiva held Ganga in his matted hair, gently releasing her onto the Earth. Gangotri is believed to be the place where Goddess Ganga first touched the Earth, making it one of the holiest sites in Hinduism.

The present Gangotri Temple was built by the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa in the early 18th century. The temple is constructed using white granite stone and follows a simple yet elegant Himalayan architectural style.
